higher learning at university malaya’s graduate school of business

Situated on a sprawling picturesque complex in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, University Malaya’s City Campus is home to  the Graduate School of Business (UMGSB). Formed in May 2000 to strengthen and enhance the business faculty’s postgraduate programmes, the UMGSB currently runs two different courses, namely the Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and the Master’s in Management (MM) programmes.

UM-MBA Programme

The UM-MBA programme is a rigorous yet flexible programme designed to prepare graduates for management and leadership roles in the business and professional communities. First offered by the University of Malaya in 1981, the continuing popularity of the programme stands as a testament to its quality.

With a wide choice of electives, each student tailors the programme to his/her specific needs. Areas of concentration include accountancy, finance, human resource management, marketing management information systems, international business and organizational development. Specific certification is provided to indicate each student’s area of specialisation.

A highlight for many students is the opportunity to participate in the Student Exchange Programme with University Malaya’s various partners, which include top European business schools and the best universities in ASEAN.

Both day and evening sessions are offered for the convenience of the busy executive.  The programme takes an average of two years of study and comprises a research project (6 credits)and a minimum of 45 hours of course time.

Current enrolment stands at 400. To enter this programme, students need a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification and at least two years of work experience after graduation. Fresh graduates or those with less than 2 years experience may be considered for full time programme

UM-MM Programme

With an emphasis on general management knowledge and skill,  the MM programme caters to the growing need for management  education among graduates. The course is specifically designed to  provide a strong foundation of general management theory and practice  to those aspiring to scale the heights of corporate success and eventually  assume top level positions in their organisations.

Since the majority of the programme’s 47 current participants are busy executives, most classes are held on weekends and  tailored specifically to those who are pressed for time. A graduating candidate will have completed a minimum of 43 credit hours of study.

The minimum entry requirement for this programme is a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification, and at least three years of work experience after graduation.

The UMGSB Experience

Students who enrol in the graduate programmes  will get to interact closely with lecturers and fellow students who  are some of the most dynamic players in industry. Over 30 per cent of  the faculty have PhDs and extensive publishing records while the rest are  qualified professionals with many years of experience in their fields.
